Abstract: Intestinal dysfunction is a major pathological process in the development of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome.Timely diagnosis and intervention in early intestinal dysfunction are important in critically ill patients. However, there is a lack of a simple, accurate and objective method of evaluating the intestinal function of critically ill patients.Citrulline, a non-protein amino acid, is synthetized mainly by intestinal epithelial cells with its plasma concentration decreasing in many intestinal injury diseases. Therefore, this article reviews the physiological and metabolic characteristics of citrulline and its recent progress in intestinal dysfunction.
